Blogging for Associations
5 Ways to Revive Your Association’s Blog
Are you dissatisfied with your association’s blog? You’re not alone. We regularly hear from association executives who are concerned about low traffic, no comments and static feed numbers. Before you throw up your hands and let your association’s blog wither on the vine, try some of these tips for reviving it.
- Balance quality with quantity.
How often do you post? The sweet spot for most association blogs is between 2 and 10 posts per week. But don’t sacrifice quality. - Blog before, during and after your conference.
Conference attendees are a built-in audience for your blog. After all, you have a backstage pass that you can use to bring a whole new side of the conference to attendees. Start by including popular, conference-related blog entries in your conference email marketing. - Post interviews with thought leaders.
From conference speakers and popular authors to the connectors in your industry, thought leaders make people listen. Plus, when you talk about a thought leader, they talk about you—especially when they are bloggers themselves. - Mix up your posts with multimedia, meta-posts and LISTS.
Different readers prefer different types of posts. Some folks like to watch videos, listen to podcasts or look at pictures. Others like the richness of a meta-post, where the author tackles a popular topic and includes links to a number of other, related blog posts. And everyone who uses the web loves lists. No kidding. - Socialize.
It’s easy to forget that a blog is really a social space. So how do you socialize as a blogger? Read and comment even more often than you post. Regularly link to other blogs. Announce your blog post on other social sites like Facebook and Twitter. And email your post to people you think will especially enjoy it–whether those people are individuals you know personally or a specific listserv.
