When it comes to creating community online, great content is not enough. You need to create engagement and that means also giving people something to do with the content and a reason for doing it. We recently wrote about three usability concepts that can help you stay on track when you’re trying to create online engagement.
- Buzz—Showcase recent community activity online with a photo and a name to create a bandwagon effect.
- Action—Design with an action-oriented approach that makes it easy to share, comment, connect and show off.
- Ego—Appeal to the professional ego of your members and give them a sense of ownership for their own data and activities in your social space. For example, let them add flair to their profile page and list all of their recent comments and postings in one place that they can reference.

OK, this presentation on usability isn’t *quite* as awesome as Joshua Porter’s (it’s more geeky), but it does provide some additional info….http://www.beaconfire.com/blog/2008/11/18/web-usability-for-associations-designing-for-your-members-a-beaconfire-executive-dialogue/
