A Wee Glimpse Into Tech09

by Maddie Grant on January 29, 2009

So I was thinking of writing some kind of synthesis of ASAE’s Technology Conference that I have just returned from, but my brain is totally fried, so just for fun I thought it might be cool to use LoudTwitter, one of the cool tools Lindy and I mentioned in our “Unleash Your Inner Geek” session, to recap my tweets during the conference in one post (warts and all, hope you don’t mind), in order to give you a quick recap instead. I hope this makes some sense; but I got several tweets from people saying they weren’t at the conference but liking my updates so I thought maybe this might be fun for others too. There are ways to find all the threaded conversations, but I wasn’t lying when I said my brain is fried – so this is all I can handle right now. Enjoy!

2:46 @brucehammond I still can’t believe you flew here from wherever and are not staying for the YAP party tonight
2:53 YAP PARTY TONITE – Rocket Bar, 714 7th st, 8:30 pm. All are invited.

[In Ben Martin and Jeff De Cagna's session on Association Social Technologies - the survey is finally available! Check it out here.]

3:09 interesting that more associations using socnets over blogs, even tho blogs are technically easier and lower hanging fruit
3:10 lots of people in the room have FB accounts for their associations
3:15 Average size of association FB group or fan page – 357 members.
3:21 Average size of association LinkedIn group – 264 members. LinkedIn is 1/10th the size of FB. Seems more likely to engage on LI.
3:25 @time2simplify yes I agree. FB is more social.
3:25 28% of surveyed associations blog – 45% have more than one blog.
3:26 @ericaholt thanks hon! : ) #tech09
3:27 rank and file members = #1 contributor to association blogs.
3:28 that goes for both multi-author and single author blogs.
3:28 #1 reason to have a blog = to engage members.
3:32 Moderate after a comment posts – you get more comments than if you moderate before.
3:33 the more often you post, the more you will have comments (per post on average) 3:39 Blogger has most associations using it (then WordPress, then Typepad)
3:42 5339 average monthly visitors to an association blog (Dec 07-June 08)
3:45 no – lurkers are just as engaged as commenters or creators!!!
3:46 enough with the legal fear stuff!
3:48 who wants to place bets on the identity of @Tech09?
3:51 @bduperrin yes, probably but there a lot of vendors in the space
3:53 @csuspect hmm – i think it’s soome young ASAE staffer. It’s definitely not Lindy – her sense of humor would show through!
3:54 so fracking tired of the fear.
3:55 @Tech09 are you a real person or a bot? #tech09
3:55 @Tech09 if you are real you need a real avatar, that picture is irksome. : ) 3:56 @liam_says hahahahaha
3:58 @mdenhardt need to find you today re our session tomorrow. Need to make sure we have our two screens/projectors? thx
3:59 @scottinmemphis you know it!!
4:19 legal stuff. Yay! But I am happy the speakers are more high energy.
4:20 cheaper for lawyers to keep you out of jail than to get you out of jail.
4:41 off topic – DC #twestival details are out! http://washington.twestival… Feb 12, Local 16.
4:49 communications decency act – important.
4:50 Digital Millennium Communication Act – other one to pay attention to. No court cases yet (not for associations anyway)
5:24 @MissLynn13 I agree, @lindydreyer and I have tried that too and it works really well.
5:29 I think associations should all go Creative Commons. : )
5:36 need a non-social break before the YAP party. See everyone there!!! Rocket Bar (714 7th St). Plain door, basement. Awesome.
8:58 @cardcat oh yes!! Party is rockin and only just started!
9:30 W00t! Higher logic crew are in da house!!

Day Three: Wednesday. Presented two sessions.

09:08 I am here. Feeling a little… Fuzzy. 4th row far left side.
09:11 May not have enough cell juice to last the day, so @ m
e if anyone needs me!
09:26 Retweeting @sacca: And, for those keeping score at home, ASAE is indeed an association of associations. Awesome.
09:27 tech09 hit the top trending topics yesterday. W00t!
09:29 @lindydreyer where r u sitting?
09:33 Sacca: focus on user interests, not obstacles.
09:39 wow. searches on movie titles can predict opening weekend numbers 6 weeks before a movie comes out!!!
09:47 sacca – transparent decision-making. yes!
09:52 trust your people and they will respect the responsibilities you give them
10:01 20% time drives innovation! gets people to stick around and give their great ideas back
10:13 anyone have an iphone charger?
10:14 didn’t get to ask my question about Google Labs. :(
10:15 i think the lab concept could be a great way for associations to start letting their staff and members come up with ideas
10:16 off topic – thanks to everyone who came to YAPs in Space last night!! it was Awe.some.Sauce.
10:17 glow bracelet did not last til morning but have my souvenir alien headband

2:55 @lindydreyer @jamienotter hey isn’t that MY copy of Groundswell?
3:02 Maybe we should all unfollow @Tech09 in protest at the lack of personality : )
3:03 @afeldt absolutely. We miss you too! @lindydreyer says hi
3:04 25 minutes til our cool tools session. Feeling a little ill.
3:05 only joking. it will be fun.

8:53 Totally beyond exhausted. What a great conference. Thx to all who came to our sessions and our party!
9:02 @ReggieHenry awesome conference. You rock!

Phew. Clearly this is just a little tiny slice of the awesomeness that was this conference. You can check out the Flickr photos, as well as the wiki and the full Twitter stream. Especially, watch the videos of the two incredible keynote speeches, by Jeff Howe and Chris Sacca. Apparently these are only up for a limited time, whatever that means, but seriously, watch them, they were both amazing. They set the tone for a really fantastic conference – thanks to them for speaking to us and inspiring us and thanks to everyone who was a part of it!
