It's almost Twestival time!

by Maddie Grant on February 5, 2009

Just before New Years, I was contacted by Amanda Rose (@amanda) who was wondering if I could put out a call on Twitter for any volunteers to help put on a Twestival for DC.

Here’s what it’s all about. On February 12, more than 175 cities around the globe will host a Tweetup party, with all proceeds going to charity:water, a “a non profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations by funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need”.

At the time, I was basically losing my mind trying to wrap up at my old association and officially go SocialFishing, so all I did was send out a couple of tweets – and I was lucky to get an immediate response from my buddy Peter LaMotteof GeniusRocket. A couple of weeks later, and the DC Twestival was up and running. Peter, you totally rock!!! Thank you for being so happy to take this on, and thank you Amanda for getting the ball rolling in the first place!

The DC Twestival will be at Local 16 at 6pm on February 12. $10 tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance and ALL proceeds go to charity:water. Want to see if there is one in your city? I bet there is.

Want to dig deeper into it? Beth Kanter has in-depth analysis.

Think about it. How can you crowdsource the power of Twitter for your causes?

[UPDATE - here's the link to the final Twestival tally - $250,000 collected, 55 wells built, 17,000 people served at time of writing. Regarding our DC Twestival, Peter Lamotte said, "Twestival ended up with over $2,500 raised and about 200 people in attendance. We had media coverage that rivaled the much larger parties. Overall people were excited b/c it brought together groups that didn't always meet for example politcos and techies." Awesome!]
