Twitter and Blogging Tips

by Maddie Grant on September 1, 2009

I’m not usually this much of a stalker, but I recently came across a couple of posts by Brent Ozar about Twitter, which I thought encompassed pretty much exactly the common-sense way in which I use it.  People say there’s no right or wrong way to use it, but I think you would agree there are better or worse ways.  I’m posting Brent’s links here because it’s taken me a long time (I’ve been on Twitter for over 2 years) to really get the most out of it and these might help you get there faster.

Top 10 Reasons I’m Not Following You on Twitter

Top 10 Reasons I *AM* Following You On Twitter

(While we’re on the subject, here’s another good one by someone else – 7 Levels of Twitter Followers.)

Check ‘em out.

So I followed Brent on Twitter, and then, as you do, started digging around his blog (which is mostly technical stuff, he’s A SQL server guy), and found this totally awesome series of blogging tips.

Building Your Blogging Momentum

Blog Better Week: The Basics of SEO

Blog Better Week: Spice Things Up with Images

Blog Better Week: How to Write a Product Review

Blog Better Week: Strunk & White’s Guide to Style

These are great tips – and he has my sense of humor! ;)

I had a nice lunch with someone last week who was considering starting his own blog, and I told him what I tell everyone:  Just start.  If you’re nervous about what people will say about your stuff, if you’re worried it might not be “good enough” (whatever that means!), set up a private blog on WordPress or Blogger (or my favorite for practicing – Tumblr). Start writing and get a feel for it.

Write for yourself first. Find your voice. Find your rhythm.  Find your speed.  Find out what time/day of the week your best blogging happens.  Whether you discover you prefer to write fast and furious and at midnight 5 days a week and/or preschedule your posts (like me), or less often but more reflectively and deeply (like Lindy), you just need to find your own method for posting regularly.  And then when you’re ready, you can open the doors, and you’ll have a few weeks of content already there for newcomers to your blog to see what you’re about.

And let me know, and I’ll spread the word. ;)

Great advice and links … good for associations too. PRSAMD and ISESDC, two of our clients, are just getting their voices and its exciting to watch. I’m just hoping they don’t judge the effort too soon!
