Want you to look at two sites for me for a minute.
Compare and contrast. Are they trying to do similar things? Are they trying to reach similar audiences? How successful do you think they are? What about the format? Or is it apples and oranges? What do you think?
I’m not trying to get at anything here, by the way. Just struck me that they had some similarities. Curious as to your thoughts.

They don’t appear (at first glance) to be doing the same things. The first is REALLY cluttered, the second looks more user friendly.
Spent all of 15 seconds on each.

I think they are doing 2 different things, but it is hard to tell what either of them are doing really. I doubt I would go to either site again. Neither one draws me in to tell me what they are doing and why I need to be there. If I have to root around to find it, it isn’t working.
The audience may be the same for both sites but the feel is certainly different.
Ex. A comes off as very traditional, yet professional. I don’t see right off a big juicy button to Sign in or a call to action. Perhaps this is aiming at a more established traditional audience of Association Executives
Ex. B comes off as a bit more modern, and frankly, more engaging. My marketing lead says people like to look at people, and boom there’s a video right up front, without a lot of other clutter. I know they want me to push play. Perhaps this site is aiming at the more up and coming association leader?
Both are very good sites but certainly feel different at how they are going about disseminating their message.
At first glance, it looks like to me they are doing similar things. The first one is very cluttered and hard to figure out its purpose. The second one is much more user friendly although I still had to search to find “who” was behind that website. Their purpose was much more evident than the first one. The second one seems like it might be more of a community for conversations, but I’m not sure.
Like Matt, I doubt I’ll visit either much in the future. Nothing to make me go “Wow,” “Aha” or “Whoa” on either site. Both trying to be something they are not.
Do you see a young girl or an old woman? LOL
Are they trying to do similar things? Yes, I think – slightly different motives in my opinion.
Are they trying to reach similar audiences? Not 100% sure… It’s nice to have sites that tell me their content is… “perfect for ‘job title’ looking to do ‘x’ ”
How successful do you think they are? Both sites need work to have a better soc/media presence and be more engaging. I’m going to say the power of A site (POA) site is slightly more successful than Futurelabs (FL) site based on comments below.
The FL site could offer a bit more content without having to immediately sign in like the POA site does… this really drove me nuts! Isn’t social media about giving something away? Maybe not, but NEW marekting rules would tell you to.
The POA site has a lot of accessible content without having to immediately join… which gives the reader a change to check it out (lower bounce rates) and it’s more findable by google (SEO).
Now, the POA is not visually stimulating, text heavy and it took me a while to understand it’s purpose as compared to the FL site. FL is bright, larger text and a warm video waiting to be played. Not to mention I really like Diana’s video (sorry John).
POA does a nice job with content and giving you mant outlets to different topics… however, they could use more engaging/larger buttons (Call to action).
Oh yeah, where’s the retweeting and sharing buttons on FL and on POA it should be on every post. Didn’t ASAE attend their annual meeting sessions. Make it easy to Share Share Share – Duh!
Both sites are good, but need some work — again, slight advantage to POA site based on the accessible content and sharing button up top. Otherwise the design and simplistic approach to FL would be better.
