Lindy and Jeff pointed to a fantastic e-book by Olivia Mitchell on How To Present With Twitter (and other backchannels). In it, she discusses not only the benefits to speaker and audience, but she also goes through some tips on how to integrate it into your presentations – from simply being aware of an audience’s capacity to be tweeting while you’re speaking, to actively monitoring, to live response, to full backchannel integration.
Bonus idea: On page 44, Olivia mentions a description by one of my fave bloggers Nina Simon of Museum 2.0, about a tool called Today’s Meet she used at the 2009 WebWise conference. Lindy and I were lucky enough to be invited by Nina to speak at that very same conference so we saw her test Today’s Meet out on the audience. It was a GREAT experiment to use for an audience that was 50/50 Twitter users and not, because it’s not dependent on Twitter (though it can integrate via hashtag if you want it to). Plus, you don’t need to sign up for an account at all to start using it – just type in a name and start chatting – so people in the audience who might not have seen this type of thing before could see how to give real time feedback in such a way as it could be integrated very easily into the content of the presentation. I highly recommend it if you want to experiment with live backchannel chat, particularly if you have an audience that is not necessarily all on Twitter.
Check out the e-book, see what you think.
