Just wanted to point out this great Beyond the Big Three series over on the Splash! blog. Shannon Otto gives the scoop on:
Good Reads
Blogs
Slideshare
Digg
Ning
Flickr
YouTube
Tumblr and Posterous
Delicious
I’d encourage everyone to explore these tools (rest assured at least some of your members are doing the same thing), but DO NOT think you have to be everywhere. You’ll probably, as an individual, end up choosing two to concentrate on in particular – one because you “feel it”, it comes naturally to you (guess which one is mine, out of all the hundreds of tools I’ve played with…) and one because you know a lot of people (either your friends or your associations’ members) are hanging out there.
The key from an organizational capacity point of view is to get different people who have an affinity with different tools to work together collaboratively to listen in all the right places. It’s not about any one person being burdened with being everywhere at once.
Since I’m on the subject of tools, I also wanted to let you know Lindy and I are conducting a free webinar over at Engage365 on January 13 at 12 noon EST on Building an Event Blog, and we’ve also got Beth Kanter presenting one for us on January 26 at 12 noon EST on The Trainer’s Social Media Tool Box: Sharing My Best Practices and Tips. She will be talking about Delicious, Slideshare, wikis and more, specifically for use by presenters and trainers. Seriously not to be missed! Hope you’ll join us at one or both of these, and of course please do check out the Engage365 community (for people interested specifically in social media and events) too.
[UPDATE: Splash! has a wrap up list with all the "beyond the big three" posts and, even more awesomely, a handy PDF with association case studies for you to check out.]

Maddie, thanks so much for highlighting this series. It’s been fun to write and explore! And I appreciate you mentioning that people don’t have to be everywhere – that’s something I probably haven’t made as clear as I should have, and I was actually thinking about adding a caveat in next week’s post. And I’ll try to make that Engage webinar; sounds like it’ll be great!
