Just a quick tip for anyone using Google Buzz. I came across this great Unofficial Google Buzz User Guide and was reading through it when I spotted a particularly interesting little tip on how to create saved keyword searches in Buzz. I’m reposting the whole little section here for you.
Create Saved Searches in Buzz
If you ever wanted to monitor your own reputation or any other search query, you can do so in buzz just as in twitter. For example, maybe you would like to keep track of what fellow buzzers are saying about the new “Alice in Wonderland” movie. You can do that, or you can create a search for your own name, brand, or website to keep track of what buzz users are saying about you.
1. First of all, you have to know that buzz is searchable. Once inside buzz, if you look at the top of the screen you will see that your search box changed from “search mail” to “search buzz”. Here is where you would enter your search enquiry.
2. The first thing to do to create saved searches is to enable “quick links” in your gmail. To do this:
A: Go to settings and click on Google Labs.
B: Scroll down until you see “quick links” and enable it.
This will put a box below your labels entitled “quick links”3. Now, go back into your buzz and type in your search query. For instance: “Lady Gaga”.
4. Click “Add quick link” in your newly created “quick link” box.
This will create a bookmark with the saved search query right there in your “quick links” box.The advantage of doing this is so that you can have frequently searched queries one click away. This means that you don’t have to remember, don’t have to retype, and can keep track of your searches on a a regular basis. This is also a fantastic way of finding new buzz users to follow.
I tried this by doing a “socialfish” search and was pleasantly surprised to find lots of people sharing and liking our posts on Buzz. Yet another way to keep track of your brand mentions and top keywords, I should think it would be especially good for finding people to follow on Buzz.
One caveat: There seems to be a feeling among early adopters that Buzz is a great sharing site in and of itself, not just a repository or aggregator for all other streams, and I agree with that – so when you do find people to follow, I would advise following them on Twitter if you note they are sharing Twitter stuff, and following them on Buzz if you see them sharing Buzz stuff or Google Reader stuff. A lot of us have unfollowed people who dump tweets into Buzz (I quickly unlinked everything except my Reader and Flickr accounts), and I imagine you’ll eventually be able to mute ALL tweets in order to choose to only look at Buzzes. Anyway I’m getting a little bit ahead of myself here, I’ll write more about that later once things calm down and they stop changing all the functionality all the time over at Casa Google Buzz. In the meantime, try this search, see what you think!
