One of my tips: Integrate with print & your other media.

I convinced our Magazine staff to let me write a social media column every other month. It was originally a stat item, but has recently been upgraded to a full blown column. The purpose of the column is to clearly explain different social media tools and/or concerns. I’ve also started to add in comments from PAs that I’ve received on different social media channels. Not only is this teach people about different tools/technologies, it’s also showing them who else they can connect with.

And don’t forget the ever important icons in your emails or on your homepage!

Not that any of these ideas are new… ;)

Be a good social media citizen. Play well with others and share the spotlight — comment on other blogs and Facebook pages, reply and DM on Twitter, retweet others’ blog posts, give link love on your blog, share posts on Facebook, thank those whom help you. Focus on giving, not taking and you’ll get some good social media karma.

In your RSS feed, include TweetMeme “Retweet” code at the beginning of the post. When your readers subscribe via Outlook, the retweet code shows up in the preview pane, making it very easy to retweet.

When using TweetMeme, be sure to format the code to include your Twitter handle, not @tweetmeme.

Three items to make it more RT-able and more viral:
1. The author’s Twitter ID (even if guest post)
2. Short URL (only takes 20 chars)
3. Optional: main company, blog, or host’s Twitter ID

e.g. RT @yourname Post Title http://bit.ly/yourpostid (via @organization-or-blog-acct)

If the title doesn’t include the keywords you’re SEO’ing, add a summary of the post that includes them. And make your keywords hashtags where appropriate.

If appropriate for your topic, include the #fb and #in hashtags so the RT’er can easily share your tweet on Facebook and LinkedIn with one click.

Rinse, repeat with FB.
