How do I “move†people over from our Facebook Group to our Facebook Page?

After the free Facebook webinar I conducted with Charityhowto yesterday, we opened up the Charityhowto Facebook Page for questions. One of the more common questions came from folks who created a group or a profile instead of a Page.

Facebook Is Easy To Use

Not! First of all, if you find Facebook more confusing than assembling a Multi-media center from Ikea, you’re not alone. It is very common for a nonprofit to unintentionally create a Group or a Profile when they meant to create a Page. And the folks who attended yesterday’s webinar were no different.

How do I “move” people over from our Facebook Group to our Facebook Page?

Ok, so you figured out what went wrong and created a brand-spankin’ new Facebook Page.

Nice and shiny.

If you’re asking how to “move” people over to your new Page, or how to “get” people to “like” your Page, you’re asking the wrong question.

Facebook fans not are like dogs. You can’t “move” them into their crates at night or “get” them to poop in the woods instead of on the front lawn.

Mostly, Facebook fans are mature adults who make their own choices about what they “like”. Mostly.

Is there a button I can just click?

It would be great if you could just click a Facebook button and suddenly, members of your Group would magically appear on your Facebook Page. Unfortunately, Facebook has yet to offer a “people mover” button.

But let’s get back to your original question. I think this is what you’re really asking:

How do I promote our Facebook Page to members of our Facebook Group?

Below are a few tactics to promote your Facebook Page to your Facebook Group. Notice that they all have to do with giving them a reason to “like” the Page.

  • Offer a free download in exchange for “liking” the Page
  • Start a discussion in the Group about the purpose of the Page. What can people expect to find there and why they should connect with your org there
  • During an offline event, use the Facebook Page as the main venue for interaction. Tell the group where all the action is.
  • Start a discussion in the Group asking folks what they’d want to see in your new Facebook Page.

  • These are a few. I’m sure you can think of many more. Share them in the comment sections below.

Manny - Thanks! I updated the post to include your article (which is awesome, by the way).

Great post, John! Here's one I wrote earlier this year on the same topic: http://bit.ly/d7Rjbp
