I recently spoke to a group of meetings professionals at Affordable Meetings National here in DC. The slides for the presentation, Social Media & Events–Get Beyond the Hype, are on Slideshare. My co-presenter, Paul Wehking from Omnipress, and I covered a lot of ground in a little time, but I think the point that resonated most was this… Set measurable (and achievable!) goals.
And to follow that point to it’s conclusion–if you’re being reasonable with your social media plans, the goals you set in year one will be far different from the goals you set in year two and year three. Why? Because the more people you know, the more you can do…as you get better at using social tools and building your network, you’ll be able to achieve more over time.
This slide from the presentation shows hypothetical goals over a three-year time frame. See what you think of it. Would this take three years, or could you accomplish it much more quickly? What goals might you add or change? How might you measure these goals?
