Did you know that the social web traffic to e-commerce websites is expanding at a rate that is much faster than the majority of the other referral traffic channels for e-commerce? In fact, almost 2% of all e-commerce traffic in the US is coming from social. This includes traffic that comes from desktop as well as mobile. In fact, if we look back and compare the first quarters of 2014 with 2015, we can see that the social media share of e-commerce referrals was at a whopping 198%! Other referral traffic drivers for e-commerce were down during this time with organic search down by 8%, email down by 4% and (perhaps most tellingly) paid search was down by 20%. Online retailers are raking it in as a result of social, in fact in 2014, the top 500 retailers had revenues of $3.3 billion dollars from social shopping alone, an increase of 26% compared to 2013.
