There is somewhere around 58 million tweets posted every single day, which breaks down to about 9,100 per second. While this is good news for those who use Twitter, because it means that they’re getting up-to-date engagement, it’s not so good for companies looking to grow their presence on this platform amidst all of the competition.
When you have to square off with that many posts, it can be extremely difficult to stand out. Yet, many people have been able to climb the Twitter chain and become some major influencers on this platform. How can you become one of them?
Get On Your Followers’ Lists
Digital marketing strategist Kim Garst says that obtaining influencer status is partially achieved by getting on your followers’ lists. With 591k followers of her own, Garst shares that this alone can give you more visibility in a manner that is “weighed very heavily as a factor in the influence rating system.”
If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of Twitter lists, it’s located just to the right of your number of followers and likes. Click on it and you will see the lists that you’re subscribed to as well as the lists that you’re already a member of (which can happen if someone else added you).
Encourage your followers to add you to their lists in some of your posts. You can even create a list of your own and share it, getting your company on lists in a more proactive way.
Put Your Twitter Account on Auto-Drive
Let’s be honest. If you did everything you should do to become one of the top Twitter influencers, you’d spend all day on this one social media site alone. Because this isn’t an option, especially if you’re a small organization and responsible for a lot of other duties besides taking care of your social media, it helps to put your account on auto-drive as much as you possibly can.
While you can’t completely step away from managing your Twitter account, using an online service to handle a majority of the engagement for you can greatly reduce the amount of effort you have to put into growing your following. For instance, one option is Narrow. This service uses keywords and hashtags to draw users to your profile. It also provides you data and insights so you can more easily tell which posts are providing the most positive impact.
Actively Engage with Your Followers
Twitter is called a “social” media platform because the whole goal is to interact with others. In other words, if you’re not actively engaging with other Twitter users, then you’re likely wasting your time.
To make the most of these engagements, Aaron Lee, a self-proclaimed “normal guy with 500k followers,” says that it helps to:
- Respond to those who have taken the time to reply to your tweets.
- Mention a minimum of five people daily in your tweets to strengthen your connection with them. (Put a “.” at the beginning of the tweet if you want it to be public; otherwise, Twitter takes starting a tweet with the “@” symbol as a private message that is only relevant to the person being mentioned.)
- Join Twitter chats to meet more people who are interested in the same things your business is.
- Follow others first so they’re inclined to follow you back.
- If you want to retweet something one of your followers posted, instead of just hitting “retweet,” cut and paste their tweet into yours so that your profile photo is the one your users will see.
Becoming a Twitter influencer takes a bit of time, but when you do these three things—get on your followers’ lists, actively engage with them, and automate your process as much as you can—you’ll definitely be going in the right direction.
